Let’s look at the three easy ways to clear clogged drains.

  1. Unclog Drains with Baking Soda and Vinegar

A mixture of baking soda and vinegar can work to loosen minor clogs. When you mix the two, a chemical reaction occurs, which breaks down minor clogs.

Here are the steps to follow.

  • If there’s standing water in the sink or bathtub, remove the water using a bowl and a bucket
  • Pour a ½ cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a ½ cup of vinegar
  • Let the mixture sit in the drain for 15 minutes and then pour boiling water down the drain
  • Repeat this process if necessary
  1. Use a Plunger to Unclog Your Drains

If the solution of baking soda and vinegar doesn’t work, try plunging. You can purchase a plunger at any home improvement store or hardware for less than $10. Plungers aren’t just for clogged-up toilets—they also work on kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, shower drains, and bathtubs.

Here are the steps to follow to unclog a drain using a plunger.

  • Fill the sink or bathtub with some water—this will allow you to create a seal between the plunger and the drain
  • Place the plunger over the drain hole and press down firmly to create a tight seal
  • Start pumping up and down slowly but firmly while keeping the seal intact
  • Remove the plunger and see if the water drains away. If it doesn’t, repeat the process

Note: If the clog is severe, plunging may not work, and you should try dislodging the clog using a drain snake.

  1. Remove Clogs with a Drain Snake

If a plunger doesn’t clear the clog, you can try to snake the drain. A drain snake is a long, flexible metal cable with an auger on the end for dislodging clogs. This tool will either break up the clog so that it can be flushed away or the clog will attach to the auger so you can pull it out. Here’s how to use a drain snake to clear a clogged drain.

  • Insert the auger down the drain opening a few inches at a time
  • Crank the handle until the auger reaches the clog
  • Rotate the snake so it will attach to the clog or break it up
  • Crank the handle to reel the snake back up and flush the drain with hot water

If snaking the drain doesn’t work, you’ll have to call a plumber in Hermitage to help you out. A skilled plumber will utilize advanced tools such as motorized augers and hydro jetting machines to clear drain clogs and keep your drains flowing freely.
