Supreme Court to Hear Property Tax Fight

Need to a property owner get the full homestead exemption if they rent out bedrooms? Two courts have reported indeed, but the Fla. Supreme Court will now acquire up the case.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On Friday, the Florida Supreme Courtroom reported it will get up a dispute about whether or not a resident is entitled to a whole homestead home-tax exemption right after renting two bedrooms to tenants.

Sarasota County Assets Appraiser Invoice Furst took the situation to the Supreme Courtroom right after the Second District Court of Charm rejected a decision by Furst in 2020. Furst claims that property owner Rod Rebholz is entitled to a homestead exemption on only 85% of the residence since bedrooms were rented out.

Rebholz filed a lawsuit to obstacle the home appraiser’s conclusion, and a Sarasota County circuit choose sided with Rebholz. Afterwards, the appeals court agreed that the home really should not be divided up for tax purposes.

It’s unclear when the Florida Supreme Courtroom might render a final decision, and an buy issued Friday did not established a day for oral arguments.
